Taxpayers already provide the Florida Virtual
School, which has about 19,000 students taking classes online.
Taxpayers this year also paid two private companies for
an online education test program. The program -- which gave
one contract to Republican bigwig William Bennett -- illegally
enrolled ineligible students. The programs, which are being
cut back but not killed, created a way for private school
students and home-schoolers to collect publicly financed
vouchers.
Sen. Wasserman Schultz's bill would let
private schools collect public payment for online courses
offered through a "franchise" from the Florida
Virtual School. Any law that blurs the line between public
schools and private schools, as this one would, could make
the public pay for private education.
When Sen. Wasserman Schultz recently commented
on lax state rules for McKay vouchers offered to disabled
students, she criticized a task force for its many ties
to a private school that accepted such vouchers. "Not
only was (the task force) skewed in the direction of private
schools," Sen. Wasserman Schultz said, "it was
skewed in the direction of one particular private school."
That's the problem with her own voucher bill.
