Special-interest voucher
When it comes to vouchers, state Sen. Debbie
Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, usually makes sense. Her latest
foray into vouchers makes a mess.
Sen. Wasserman Schultz repeatedly and correctly
has criticized Gov. Bush's collection of poorly conceived,
poorly administered voucher programs. But at the request
of her children's private school -- Sagemont School in Weston
-- she has found a voucher to love. Taxpayers, she has decided,
should pay for students to attend private school online.
One of the worst things about Gov. Bush's
voucher programs is that they are the result of special
requests from special interests. Big Republican donors,
private-school ideologues and GOP insiders eager to make
a buck on Internet education all have benefited. Sen. Wasserman
Schultz now is carrying water for Sagemont. The personal
connection blows her credibility and damages her ability
to speak against other bad voucher schemes, including the
idea of giving vouchers to children of armed service personnel,
no conditions required. Under rules spelled out in Senate
Bill 1458, which offers online vouchers to schools accredited
by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Sagemont
could be the only school eligible.
